Training Opportunities The Poetry Society offers a number of opportunities for young people who wish to gain an insight into the creative realm of writing and editing or a practical experience of arts administration.
We have some of our opportunities listed below, but we also post information about all our young people’s development opportunities, alongside those by other poetry organisations, on the Young Poets Network facebook page. “Like” the page to be kept in the loop!
Youth Members of the Poetry Society are invited to submit poems, articles, reviews and illustration to our e-zine YM:Poetry www.ympoetry.org
There are also regular workshops and challenges on the Young Poets Network, check out the most recent workshop posts and features for details.
The Foyle Young Editors opportunity is funded by the Foyle Foundation and is open to winners and commended winners of the Foyle Young Poets Award who are under 25.
We are currently recruiting guest editors for issues seven and eight of YM: Poetry. YM:Poetry has a different guest editor for each issue. As guest editor you will be responsible for choosing a theme for your issue, sourcing poems, reviews, articles and artwork. You will keep records of submissions and select those you wish to include in your issue. You will be reliable, have excellent organisational skills and the ability to work to strict deadlines. You will also have a good phone manner and will be able to liaise effectively with contributors, Poetry Society staff and fellow editors assigned other editions.
As editor you will principally work remotely and will thus need to have phone and internet access. You will also be expected to have a good working knowledge of online social networks and office systems.
Guest editors must have either won or been commended in the Foyle Young Poets Award and be under 25. It you are interested please send a CV and a covering letter in which you must explain why you think your skills would make you the best candidate, what you hope to get from the opportunity, and in which year(s) you had success in the Foyle Award (cover letter maximum 1 page). Please be aware that the role of guest editor is both hard work and time consuming requiring perseverance and dedication. Please also note that it may help your application if you have shown dedication to YM by contributing articles, poetry or illustration to past issues.
£150 will be paid to each editor.
Please send applications and any queries to Holly Hopkins at hhopkins@poetrysociety.org.uk by November 15th 2011.
The Foyle Internships run each summer, and are offered to winners and commended winners of the Foyle Young Poets Award or SLAMbassadors UK. Foyle Internships support young people who wish to extend their knowledge of how a Literature organisation works, and to build office and administration skills.
Applications for 2011 Foyle Internships are now closed. The scheme will re-open spring 2012.
