Cedrik Kavanagh

a poem for when words are not enough

in the silent hours,

sitting without purpose,

i try to conjure words

to fit you

'paperclip' – noun

a wire, a spiral stretched

with some awkward elegance,

holds papers together

(and we are holding each other ,

i am enveloped in you,

and i am openjng your

letter, your words flooding me)

words,

with which to

sculpt your description

'creature' - noun

animal, animate being,

characterized by eating,

sleeping

(and you're curled up in my

bed, head cradled in your

arms, hiding, smiling at me)

words that made you smile,

you would take delight in

their pronunciation

'vestibule' - noun

a minor enclosed space,

a passageway, an entrance

(and entranced am i

by your laugh, we

are on the train and you,

giggling at that word over the tannoy)

a word, once an annoyance,

would become a gulf of cold,

cold and empty air

'distance' - noun

the space between two people,

measured in miles, but also

in words and in heartbeats

(and your words explain

and my voice cracks

behind this calm façade)

words which i cling to,

desperate, lonely, a fool?

'hope' - verb

to believe, trust,

in a desired future,

to hope, against hope

(and i am still sat here

in the silent hours,

hoping)

and words still cannot describe
