The Soho Theatre resonated with the sound of London’s youth as they took part in the Rise Londonwide Youth Slam Championship 2007. Over 19 acts whooped the capacity crowd into a frenzy of approval as they expressed what it means to be a young Londoner today.

The recent spate of gun and knife crime featured in many of the performances. “Knock, knock, bang, bang ‘cause he’s in the wrong gang” rapped Tom Donovan (above) in his lyrical look at gang crime. Oneme Edgworth and Stephanie Turner (below) spoke of the ‘mentality that is causing fatalities” as they appealed to other young people to not let there heads be lost.

Looking beyond the stereotypes was another reoccurring theme – “stop all stereotyping we’re more than what you see” was the request from Angelique Gallardo and Gurmeet Kaur while Hollie Johnson and Bianca Terry responded “we don’t revolve around bangs we aint all in gangs” and Jerome Smith and Blaire Barrett (below) explained that they never picked up a gun but “we picked up a pen. People never got hurt by a lyrical skank”.

The passion of the performances matched the passion of the language and each performer held audiences captivated with their responses to life in London.
