Poet Lindsay MacRae led a poetry workshop at St George’s Hanover Square Primary School, Westminster in early November. Here are some of the poems written by children in year five.

The Queen of the Forest

For ninety years
I have tasted the slimy snow slither down my evergreen leaves
And felt the sharp saw smash through my wood.
On my journey,
Darkness flew around me like the cloak of the night sky.
On my journey,
Broom!!!! The lorry whizzed across the motorway showering me in rain.
On my journey,
I can hear the chattering of crowds and the bustle of people buying presents.
Choirs sing to me in Trafalgar Square.
I FEEL GLAMOROUS!!!!

For Ninety Years

I felt as cold as ice-cream that makes your teeth ache.
Then Christmas came
I saw people gathering up like vicious tigers.
Then Christmas came
I saw the darkness around me wrapping me up like a blanket.
Then Christmas came
I saw the cars driving rapidly past me.
Then Christmas came
I can smell the fantastic food from restaurants.
I am covered by a thousand lights.
I feel FABULOUS

For Ninety Years

I have seen the bears surrounding me
On my journey
The saw felt like sharks’ teeth biting
Through my skin.
On my journey
The waves crashed against me. The water dripped
Like tears from my face.
On my journey
Wind rushed through my soul. Street lights sped by.
On my journey
Now I watch over the children singing carols
Like an angel of god.
I feel like Heaven!
