Poet Chrissie Gittins led a poetry workshop at Edward Wilson primary school, Westminster in early November. Here are some of the poems written by children in year five.
I’m
surrounded
by
crystal white
mountains and gloomy
light,
I’m worried in case I get cut down.
The thunder crashes and
the hail hits my branches.
I can hear voices.
I can hear a truck.
Then the chain saw vooooooooooooms.
I can feel the pain of the blades.
I fall straight, hit the ground,
am carried onto the truck.
As I thump into the ship
I float away from the place where I grew.
I slide from side to side,
hear the brrrrrrrrrrrr of the engine.
In the navy blue sky
the stars shine.
In the distance I can see the lights of Immingham,
blurry in the mist.
We race down the motorway through the countryside
and arrive at Trafalgar Square.
I am wrapped in five hundred glistening lights.
I can hear cheering, children playing, the singing of carols.
Until Twelfth Night when I’m taken down
and cut into bits for mulch.
I live on in your memory, in the hope that war will never happen again.

A butterfly brushing your eye
while gliding through the sky.
My Mum smearing a huge amount of icing
on top of my delicious cupcake.
The deep blue sea crashing against
a tough rock.
A flower that sprouts out
fragrance and happiness.
A dream which seemed like a reality
and made me smile a huge smile.
My friend smiling at me –
her glistening teeth shining.

A giant iceberg splashing into the cold sea.
A beautiful whale attracted by a female whale.
Two tiny spiders sliding down a hole very quickly.
A skating squirrel smelling sweet, like perfume.
A humongous elephant giving birth to a baby.
Six hyenas dancing and laughing their way
into the savannah.

A sponge squishing out delicious candy.
The sun and moon smashing together
to make half dark, half light.
Ponies galloping in the long
stretched meadow.
Whizzing down a sky scraping roller coaster.
A photo album filled
with every year you have lived.
A French baguette with melted butter
spreading with delight.
