Poet Coral Rumble led a poetry workshop at Drayton Park primary school, Islington in early November. Here are some of the poems written by children in years five and six.
WHOOSH, I can hear the cold wind blowing,
My arms are prickle holders,
As I stretch out my arms I can feel trees as sharp as porcupines.
Owls swoop by as I wait for the journey.
I’m scared and frightened,
I can feel rumbling vibrations,
The ship’s horn is as loud as a drill.
CRASH go the waves as they hit the lighthouse.
I can see streetlamps in the distance.
I’m excited and nervous,
I can hear the splash of the water fountains.
Zebra crossings are almost everywhere to be found,
People rush by as fast as stampeding elephants.
I feel like I’m attention seeking.

Crunch crunch go footsteps
My prickles are as sharp as needles.
Up ahead I see a lost snow boot.
Lanky branches hang all over me.
And I’m the chosen one!
I’m so excited and very nervous
Whoosh! Crash! Splash go the waves
Wow! The city lights ahead
Vrum! The car engine starts
The car horn is as loud as a lion’s roar
And I’m the chosen one!
Foot steps on the cobble streets
People rushing around like athletes.
Waterfalls going splish splash.
I’m the breath holder
I’m the attention seeker
I am proud and pretty
Because I’m the chosen one!

DING DONG!
People say I’m as brown as soil,
I see soft snow,
But I’m frozen like a statue.
Psst!
I see an air swayer in the air,
Birds flying quietly in the sky,
Sea spray got covered around me,
I started to feel slightly worried.
VOOM VOOM!
I quickly felt that I was being lifted on a ship,
The ship was sailing as smooth as an ice skater,
Suddenly we stopped.
BANG!
I looked at the shops’ signs shining like gold,
I heard people singing carols.
A shop opened beside me,
I’m a crowd bringer they say.
I feel happy, proud, excited.
