Poet David Harmer led a poetry workshop at Allerton Primary School, Lincolnshire in early November. Here are some of the poems written by children in years five and six.
I’m happy to be chosen, I am so proud,
At Christmas I’ll be gone, I will be alone.
I’m settled down so leave me alone, get gone.
I am not ready to go to the busy city.
The moonlight, stars and trees are my friends,
Soon I will be leaving! Why me?
I am peacefully sleeping under the stars,
Please don’t awake me with a loud buzzing bee sound.
My forest is deep, dark and peaceful.
I don’t want to go to noisy, bright, busy London.
Lots of jolly Christmas songs will be sung around me,
As soon as that’s over, I will be alone.
I will be surrounded in bright, white lights.
Then they will go out and I will be alone.

The ship is rocking up and down
Like a rollercoaster
In a scary slashing storm
The waves are as wild as a lion
Roaring fiercely in a savage storm
I cannot move I feel trapped
And stuck still, I’m afraid.
But nothing to fear, I will soon
Be in London with people around me.
Finally I’m here
Safe and sound in Immingham
Away from all the stormy seas.
But now I see an enormous crane
Coming down to grab me
Finally I’m free.

Listen to what the children sing
They sing hallelujah around me
Listen to what the children say
They speak of hope, light and happiness
Listen to what the children dream
They dream about love – memories and laughter
Listen to what the children hope
They hope about happiness – gifts and warmth
I was with my friends in a forest
I am in Trafalgar Square with lots of people
I feel so proud
Here I am in London
Up right, strong and tall
Diamond lights
White lights
Can’t miss me at all.
